Back to camp we go!
Camp Sunshine has been a part of my life since 2005 when a nurse pushed, to put it kindly (haha), that I attend a trip to Washington, D.C. I was apprehensive and my parents were terrified. I hadn't been well. I could barely get out of bed and was constantly in the hospital. At the time I did not know, but Camp Sunshine would change my life forever. That trip taught me I could be independent, and I learned I could fight to survive. I also learned to give myself injections in a hotel lobby ;).
After that I attended one year of summer camp and fell in love. I was unable to attend my last year due to my Bone Marrow Transplant, but I was adamant to return as a LIT in 2007. I haven't left since.
Camp is a place where I have made lifelong friends. As a camper and as a volunteer. The people you meet at camp are the people that truly understand you. They love you unconditionally and they uniquely recognize your struggles and your joy. We share an unmatched bond.
Camp Sunshine is more than a camp. It is a little slice of sunshine in the darkness for so many of us "poor little sick kids". It is a place and spirit of hope, independence, and courage. It becomes a part of who we are and who we will become. This is why I keep going back, and why I raise money to keep this magical place going. Camp isn't just a week in the summer. We offer programs for patients and families all year! This comes in the form of family & sibling camps, teen retreats, remember the sunshine, and so many more programs offered at the hospital and throughout Georgia. I'll never be able to put what Camp Sunshine does into words. I can only express what it has done for me and the lives of children with cancer and their families!
While, I still suffer from life long complications of my childhood illness, Camp gives me hope and life. I am so thrilled to finally go back in person! Please help me in any way you can to continue giving campers and their families hope and love.
